Bressay Lighthouse

Shetland Isles

Location Guide

This lighthouse is located on Kirkabister Ness on the southwest side of the island of Bressay, marking the southern entrance to the harbour of Lerwick, the principal town of the Shetlands.

A complete light station, including a principal keeper's house, two assistant keeper's houses, engine room, and other buildings enclosed by a stone wall. It was one of four lighthouses built in Shetland between 1854 and 1858, designed by Stevenson brothers, David and Thomas, although David initially maintaining that building a lighthouse in Shetland waters was impossible, too dangerous and too expensive, and that any ship who took this route was mad.

In 1995 the buildings, other than the light tower were sold to the Shetland Amenity Trust. The two assistant keepers houses have been renovated for overnight accommodation. The principal keepers cottages, self catering accommodation, and it's adjacent engine room converted to a bunk room. The engine and radio room is a marine heritage centre.
