Foula Lighthouse

Shetland Isles

Location Guide

Foula, Shetland is said by some to be 'the edge of the world'. It is one of Britain's most remotest islands and is primarily a nature reserve for birds. It is situated 24 miles west of West Burra and about 20 miles west of the Shetland mainland and is accessible by ferry, although this is dependent on weather conditions.

The lighthouse is located at the south point of the island, accessible via a hiking trail.

It was built as a gas powered major light in 1986 and has never been manned. It was built because of the increase in oil tanker traffic using the west coast route, other lights at other points were also established at the same time. Since 2000 it has been powered by 36 solar powered panels although this is backed up with 4 small wind generators.

It was the last major lighthouse to be built on the Shetland Isles.
