Talyllyn Railway
Tywyn, Gwynedd

7¼ miles of 2ft 3in gauge track along the Fathew Valley from Tywyn Wharf near
the coast of Cardigan Bay, to Nant Gwernol, three miles from the lake which
gives the railway its name. Much of the route is within the Snowdonia National
Park
One of the Great Little Trains of Wales, this
railway runs on a 2ft 3 inch gauge.
It originally opened in 1865 and still has two
of its original locomotives, these trains run on some Saturdays with carriages
from the same period, they also have 4 other steam and 4 diesel locomotives.
The line was the first narrow gauge railway to be designed to be operated with
steam locomotives, and was built like many of the narrow gauge railways in
North Wales, to serve the slate industry, but also carried passengers almost
from the outset. The line ran only as far as Abergynolwyn, from where Bryn
Eglwys quarry was reached by cable-worked inclines.
Tywyn (Wharf),
the main station on the Talyllyn, has refreshment rooms and souvenir shop with
car park and toilet facilities.
It is also the location of the
Narrow Gauge Railway Museum
with free admission.
The other end is at Nant Gwernol, a station
over seven miles from Tywyn with no road access. At the end of the platform is a
footpath up a steep incline which formerly carried the slate wagons to a tramway
leading eventually to Bryn Eglwys quarry, further up in the hills. Abergynolwyn
station, on the B4405, is half a mile from the end of the line and has road
access with a car park. In total their site map shows 7 stations and 4
halts (request stops). Car parks are near to Tywyn Wharf, Dolgoch Falls and
Abergynolwyn stations.
Dolgoch Falls
 , three sets of waterfalls in a beautiful wooded ravine, are
served by Dolgoch station and many passengers alight here before rejoining the
train later in the day.

There are toilet facilities for passengers in
wheelchairs at Tywyn Wharf and Abergynolwyn stations, and special carriages
are always available for wheelchairs, except on Vintage and Victorian
Trains. It helps if you can let them know that you are coming so they can
make arrangements and provide assistance.
Some stations are not accessible by wheelchair
or to those with walking difficulties due to the steep access via footpaths.
Parking is difficult at many of the halts and smaller stations. |
