Vale of Rheidol Railway

Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire

Prince of Wales at Aberystwyth Station on the Vale of Rheidol Railway
Leaving Aberystwyth station

This railway runs for 11¾ miles from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge using the 2ft (1ft 11 1/2 inches) gauge. Over this line there is a height difference of 600ft. It is one of the Great Little Trains of Wales.

It was built to move produce from the lead mines and timber for pit props.

The original stations were at Aberystwyth, Llanbadarn, Capel Bangor, Nantyronen and Devil's Bridge.

Over recent years a lot of work has been done on this railway, and in particular in opening up views, in places this train runs around ledges on hillsides and at other points goes through attractive scenery.

The locomotives and carriages currently in use were built for the line by the Great Western Railway between 1923 and 1938. These were built in Swindon and the same width as main line engines and carriages.

At Devil's bridge, there are walks to Mynach Falls, Devil's Punchbowl and Jacob's Ladder.
