Dunham Massey

Altrincham, Cheshire

Location Guide

The Dunham Massey estate has a Hall (Mansion House), a Sawmill, landscaped garden and deer park. It has an ancient herd of fallow deer who roam the 250 acre park.

The Georgian mansion, was originally built in 1616 but was later remodelled between 1732 and 1740. It is filled with collections of paintings, furniture and Huguenot silver. You get to go 'below stairs' to the service wing and discover how the running of a country house took place. It was used as a military hospital during the First World War and was donated to the National Trust in 1976. There are various other buildings around the house including stables and a carriage house.

Landscaped Gardens. The site is moated and lies west of the village of Dunham. Enjoy the plantsman's garden full of native favourites and exotic treasures, then discover the rare Victorian bark house and Georgian orangery.

The Deer Park. Is south of the village of Dunham and you can wander around the beautiful avenues and ponds in the ancient park and spot the fallow deer and many rare birds. It is the only mediaeval park to survive in Trafford.

The sawmill probably built in 1616 has had it's giant waterwheel restored to full working order.
