Established in 1670 it is over 70 acres of
landscaped grounds just one mile outside the city of Edinburgh.
The Edinburgh Garden Features include:
| The Garden is
home to the largest collection of wild-origin Chinese plants outside China.
The Scottish Heath Garden, recreates the plantings and landscape of the
Scottish highlands; the Rock Garden, is home to over 5,000 alpine plants and
a165m-long Herbaceous Border, backed by a century-old Beech Hedge.
Queen Mother's Memorial Garden, based on the motif
of the historic Eassie Cross near Glamis Castle, the Scottish home of the Queen
Mother. The four corners of the garden have been designated different areas of
the world at the heart of each a seating area with a central specimen tree.
There is also a stone pavilion engraved with the names of societies, charities
and companies who the Queen Mother was associated with. At the heart of the
garden is a labyrinth planted with bog myrtle a native plant of the highlands of
Scotland.
Among the Garden's many thousands of trees and shrubs
there are conifers, rhododendrons, Sierra redwoods of North America as well as
beeches, maples, and colourful rowans.
At the heart of the Garden is the Victorian Temperate Palm House - the tallest of its kind in Britain - the glorious entrance to Windows on the World, a glasshouse exploring
10 distinct climate zones holding around one percent of all known flowering
plants, cycads and ferns.
Other features within the garden include
the glasshouses, a pond, a waterfall, and Inverleith House now used for
housing art exhibitions and educational facilities.
