Abermawr

Another cove off the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path.

It is a large, secluded bay facing west, with an impressive pebble bank above the beach, which was created in a huge storm in 1859. When the tide is out (low tide) sand is revealed and is a good site for kiting. It is known for  for its solitude and also surfing as its never crowded and it gets southerly and northerly winds cross-shore, but the strong currents can be hazardous.

At very low tide the stumps and roots of a drowned forest may also be exposed. It is believed it dates back from around 6,000BC, it extends out to sea between a mile and just a few metres. Flints and tools have been found so researchers believe it was inhabited at this time.

There are some unexpected currents in places in this cove so take care if bathing or walking on rocky outcrop.

It is backed by woodlands and fields with high cliffs to the south and lower crumbling cliffs to the north. The area is looked after by the National Trust, in spring time their are full of flowers like bluebells, primroses and pink campions. At night bats fly in the tree tops.

The beach is well signposted from the crossroads on the A487 about a mile north of Mathry. The road is very narrow and parking limited. There is a short path to the beach from the roadside.

There are excellent walks along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, with superb views, to either side of Abermawr.

Nearby is the Cable Hut, now a private dwelling, which originally housed one end of the first undersea telegraph lines between Britain and America, laid in 1873.

Access: Probably difficult as the path is downhill to the beach. A gradually narrowing single-track road runs to the beach. There’s a short path to the beach from the roadside. Parking is very limited to the roadside by the Cable Hut. Take care not to block the road.
