An oak woodland on a steep slope on the side of a valley carved out by a glacier. A generally damp atmosphere encourages growth of mosses and lichens, some of which are quite rare. Much of the woodland has had grazing animals excluded from it since the 1960's which has allowed a rowan-dominated shrub layer to develop well. Outside the woodland, and on the steepest parts in particular, open rocky areas support small tracts of heather and scrub woodland. The small meadows are rich in wild flowers. A wide variety of woodland and upland birds may be heard or seen in this area. The village of Ystradffin (SA20 0PG) is less than a mile away, and Cynghordy Viaduct (SA20 0LN) is around 5 miles away.
