Coedydd Aber

North Wales

Location Guide

Coedydd Aber is National Nature Reserve situated in an area of scenic beauty. It is located between Snowdonia's Mountains and the North Wales Coast. The steep sided wooded valley consisting of oak, ash, birch and alder and in spring carpeted with Bluebells, leads to a spectacular waterfall in the foothill of Y Carneddau, which has long been a popular beauty spot.

This is the steepest river in the whole of Wales and England, the fall measures up to 100 feet. Near the main path leading to the waterfall are some small outbuildings where inside one of them is a small exhibition about the valley.

As well as a walk through a variety of natural habitats, a mile from the car park to Rhaeadr Fawr (Big Waterfall) takes you through 3,000 years of history. Huge natural forces from the earth and climate created this valley and man, over the centuries, shaped the valley that you see today.

The site supports a variety of habitats including a diversity of woodlands, open farmland and scrub. A range of nesting birds can be found here, including raven and peregrine on the cliffs, tree pipit and redstart along the woodland edge, and pied flycatcher and wood warbler in the oak woods.

There are many historic and archaeological monuments, including cairns, round and long Irish huts, a medieval hafod, an iron age hill fort and a burial chamber from the bronze age testifying to the long history of human occupation.

The Nature Reserve is currently part of an expansive community plan - Dyffryn Gwarchodaeth Abergwyngregyn – which helps keep the fine balance between conservation and recreational needs.
