D2X and D2Xs compared  at time of initial D2Xs launch (PDF opens in a new window)

Some of the changes was also added later  to the D2X, via firmware update.

Main features - by Nikon at the time this camera was released

Since the launch of the D1 in 1999, all Nikon digital SLR cameras, from consumer-class to professional models, have utilized Nikon DX-format image sensors of the same size. Following in the footsteps of the D2H, the D2X provides the same performance and design innovations combined with a Nikon DX-format image sensor that delivers a higher pixel-count. Improved image quality made possible by the higher pixel-count of the D2X is achieved by incorporating a new CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) image sensor with an effective pixel-count of 12.4 megapixels.

Our notes

  • A solid professional camera, with large battery.
  • This camera produces good photos, although not quite as sharp as the D200.
  • A firmware update allowed this camera to be updated to have most of the features added to the D2Xs, which replaced it.
  • We still have a D2X with the modified firmware in use. It is particular useful when we want to drive larger mechanical auto focus lenses or use non Nikon long lenses (dim), as it has a brighter viewfinder. The downside now is that we have become used to larger back panels.
  • Some people find these cameras too large and heavy.
  • There is not yet a real replacement for the D2X/s as the D3 with a DX lens is only a 5mp camera. A D3X is expected soon.
  • These cameras are really well built, they would last several lifetimes. Its just that technology at present is running so fast that we are looking at replacing them so soon. We often forget that these cameras still do what they did a couple of years ago, and often by taking images in RAW  and processing them in later software we get the benefits of later developments.
  • For the person retiring with a limited budget, getting hold of a good one of these second hand could be the only digital camera they will need to buy.
