 a Very Successful 2016

Happy New Year

I cannot believe it is 2016. We only managed to do one visit last month and that was to Croome Court near Worcester. It is a fairly recent National Trust property only being taken on by them in 1997. There is extensive conservation works taking place within the main house, but also the grounds are gardens are being worked on to. It's claim to fame is it was the first commissioned landscape design of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, and during 2016 you will probably come across him a lot as it is the 300th anniversary since his birth. There are more than 250 landscapes throughout the UK attributed to him including:

Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire

Dyrham Park, Gloucestershire

Audley End, Essex

To find something near you take a look at the Capability Brown Festival website where you will find an interactive map of gardens across the UK attributed to him. There is also loads more information about the man himself and the many events that will be taking place during this coming year to celebrate his birthday.

Many of his creations are large landscapes or gardens. Throughout this resource we have various articles on how to get the best out of Landscape photography as well as a whole Gardens section with hints and tips on how to photograph gardens and plants. Take a look at these and get some ideas before visiting so that you can make the most of your time there.

Don't forget if you have some great photos of places you have visited and they aren't included amongst these pages then you can email us with details and examples for us to include. If you have photos or information of any of the pages we have already written up, please also get in touch. In this issue we have updated a couple of pages because we received further information together with some great photos, from Rob Davis from Telford on the Longdon Aqueduct in Shropshire and from Brian Mills for the Nash Point Lighthouse in Glamorgan.

We hope to be out and about  more ourselves this year, so keep checking back to see what new stuff is being added.

Places Visited in the Last Month
Croome Court, Worcestershire. Croome once the home of the Earls of Coventry. It was the first landscape parkland/garden of the designer Capability Brown. He was employed by the Earl of Coventry as an architect initially and then took on the task of redesigning the parkland including moving the church. With its impressive manmade lake and grotto as well as other hidden gems within the grounds it is a good place for a stroll. The house is open but there are extensive restoration works going on. You are able to explore the ground floor and basement, where you will find a glass window and some of the original building which existed before Capability and the Earl remodelled it. The house has also been a school, the National Trust took stewardship of it in 1997 and are in the process of bringing it back to life. It was also a secret wartime airbase experimenting with the use of radar and there is a visitor centre on site with audio visual displays and memorabilia from this time.

We are upgrading this website

We are moving from a Microsoft Frontpage based website to something much newer and more flexible, run on our Apple systems. This is a major change and is going on in the background.

Our Windows computer is often difficult to start and we have decided that should it fail, before the new system is live, we will allow a gap of a month or two to occur rather than waste time setting up outdated systems as a temporary measure. So if we go missing for a month or two please check back regularly as we will be back. Hopefully there will be no problem and we will be able, in the near future, to switch over to the new system and as you may have noticed we have been out collecting a vast amount of more information to expand it.

Let's Explain How This Resource Works

Our most popular feature is the monthly diary covering interesting and unusual things on, around the UK, in the two months ahead. Our monthly front page/newsletter, from the beginning, is still available and can be accessed via our 'recent editions' link.

Everything that appears amongst these pages, or ever has, is indexed in a number of ways, alphabetically, by topic, by county, and often linked in to sections. Many of the sections have their own front doorways so people with specific interests have direct access through these doors to their area of interest.

All of our links are coded showing you if it's an external link or one of our own pages and when it is, the type of page it is. A key to the most popular codes is at the bottom of the contents panel on the left and clicking on any of the symbols will bring up a full list. On any page, holding your mouse over one of these symbols tells you what it means.

If this is your first visit, click here to find out how you might best use this site to help you find what you are looking for.
