At 240ft its the tallest overall falls in Wales,
the falls descending in three steps over the 240ft drop, passing at one
place through a natural arch (fairy bridge) in the rocks.

In winter this is a substantial waterfall, in
the summer far quieter but still impressive.
The waterfall collects its water from the heather and bog moors of the
Berwyn mountains, which eventually feed into the little Afon Disgynfa
(meaning descent or landing place) and then over a series of rapids over
the bands of volcanic rock till it approaches the 240ft drop.
Here mudstone and shale are exposed and the
water is able to carve itself shapes and pools. There are four plunge pools,
four cascades and a fairy bridge. In summer when rainfall is light there are two
delicate streams, which sparkle and gurgle as they tumble over the rocks but
after heavy rain the aspect changes and the peat red waters thunder into the
pools creating walls of spray and spouts through the fairy bridge.
Winter and freezing temperatures turn it into a
fairyland of ice sculpture where spray blown to the side of the falls freezes on
the vegetation and trees and forms a wonderland of hanging icicles and hoar
frost.
The 60 acres of the complex is managed by the
owner of the tearooms at its foot, where winter time finds you a roaring log
fire and tasty snacks whilst you watch the falls from the covered patio area. In
the summer the restaurant is cool and the garden a delight with wild birds
trying to eat your scones before you can.

Getting there: From the A5 travelling north, turn left onto
B4396 at Nesscliffe, go through Knockin. At junction of main road from
Welshpool to Oswestry, cross-straight over (staggered junction) at White Lion
Pub, Llynclys. Continue on B4396 into Llanrhaeadr (approx. 25 minutes).
From the A5 travelling south, turn off A5 (Oswestry bypass) onto A483.
After 3 miles turn right at Llyclys cross roads (White Lion Pub on your
right), continue on B4396 into Llanrhaeadr (approx. 14 miles).
In Llanrhaeadr go through the main square, past the Wynstay Arms, and turn
right into Waterfall Street just before Greatorex, Corner shop. The
Waterfall is signposted above the shop, continue along Waterfall Street for
4 miles until the road ends at the waterfall.
